Organized by the JGL Pharmacy museum, an exhibition dealing with the historical pharmacies of Rijeka and Sušak from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century will be set up on the pedestals on Korzo from 20 to 27 July. Pharmacy has made an undeniable
contribution to civilization, and pharmacies and pharmacists have been extremely important to the daily life and development of every place. In 1240 by the edict of Emperor Frederick II. pharmacy separates from medicine and becomes a separate activity which is a key event for the development of pharmacy. Croatia is a country that inherits a 750-year-long pharmaceutical tradition; our oldest pharmacy in Trogir dates from 1271. Among the oldest preserved pharmacies operating continuously in Europe is the Friars Minor Pharmacy in Dubrovnik from 1317, which suggests that the pharmacy in Croatia developed almost simultaneously with European trends in pharmacy .
In the year when we celebrate a valuable jubilee, JGL Museum of Pharmacy with this exhibition wants to show the people of Rijeka and all guests the pharmacies that operated in Rijeka and Sušak at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Visitors will have the opportunity to get acquainted
in more detail with the pharmacies that operated in Rijeka during its “golden age”, and some of them are still in the same place today!
JGL Museum of Pharmacy was opened in October 2020 as the first private museum of its kind in Croatia, and in Užarska ulica 11 you can see the permanent exhibition of the museum and get acquainted in a modern way with the history of pharmacy in Rijeka, Croatia and the world.
The exhibition is organized in cooperation with the City of Rijeka.
